About The Charities
Philadelphia Reads:
"An initiative of the mayor's office on education, PHILADELPHIA READS is a non-profit organization in partnership with The Free Library of Philadelphia and The School District of Philadelphia. We envision a city where our children are equipped to independently read on grade level by the end of their third grade year. Currently, about 33% of America's fourth graders are reading at or below the "basic" proficiency level. Literacy research reports that if children are unable to read on grade level by the end of their third grade year, their chances for later academic success are greatly diminished, guaranteeing their likelihood to become school-dropouts. Even more startling is the fact that roughly 85% of juveniles in the court system are illiterate. It is evident that we need change, now!
Our mission at PHILADELPHIA READS has been the same since our beginning, to get every child in our city to read on grade level by the end of their third grade school year. Why is this so important? Educational studies indicate that between the preschool and third grade years, children are learning to read and post their third grade year, children are reading to learn. With this in mind, it is evident that if a child is not able to read, unfortunately, they are unable to learn. This is why we focus on "raising a city of readers!" We not only want our city's children to be educationally successful, we know that they can be educationally successful! The success of our children lies on the shoulders of those willing to work together to ensure the sustainability of high-quality learning environments." (From the Philadelphia Reads website)

Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network:
"The problem of family homelessness is complex. A large number of factors that are often out of our control—such as job loss and health crises—can easily change the financial status of an otherwise stable family. And it’s a growing problem. On any night of the year in Philadelphia, an estimated 1,000 to 1,300 children and their families are homeless. With the worsening economy, families are finding themselves unable to make their rent or mortgage payments. And Philadelphia’s shelter system is stretched beyond capacity. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution or quick fix. Ending homelessness requires a holistic approach that begins with meeting immediate needs, and extends further to alleviate the root causes and help families achieve lasting independence. Our approach is highly effective. 92% of our families have succeeded in permanently overcoming homelessness. Please read through our website to learn more about our program." (From Website)
